aaand we're off!

Well we are about 4 days behind schedule already but isn't that what this trip is about? Forgetting the daily grind, living in the moment, and going where our eyes go? Yes, yes it is.

Except it's not. My brother, Brett, is flying into Guatemala on Monday to meet us for some Spanish immersion! Seeing as its 52 hours of driving from here and it's now Thursday night, it looks like he'll have to find a ride from the airport. Hopefully we won't be too far behind.

The plan is this: Drive through the night and arrive in Brownsville TX tomorrow late. Stay the night and hit the border Saturday morning. Then drive 8 hours per day in Mexico and arrive in Panajachel, Guatemala Wednesday. Typically, I'm all for jumping right in but right now I only have two concerns.

One, we have been going non stop for three weeks since we moved out of our place in Houston. We packed up our entire lives, drove across the country, collected the rest of our belongings from my parent's and grandma's house, unpacked our entire lives, repacked our entire lives, moved our entire lives into a storage unit and then spent the next two weeks getting ready for the trip. We are ready for a break. So don't be surprised if our next post has us in some fancy hotel for a couple days!

The second concern is that we haven't really had a trial run with our set up. It seems like that would have been a good idea. We picked apart many blogs of those who are ahead of us, but other than testing out our stove in my sister in laws garage, we have no experience with most of our gear. Ah well... I'm more of a wing-it kinda guy anyway.

At least we know we have a comfy place to sleep!

  1. OK first, you two are AWESOME. Second, Guatemala is INCREDIBLE!You will love Lake Atitlan. You also have to check out Semuc Champey- it's pretty far west and about an 8 hour drive from Pana but it's totally worth it. When you go stay in Lanquin- it has a hostel called El Retiro. It's BEAUTIFUL. Communal meals every night, hammocks on the porch and a vista that is unreal. Third. Be SAFE! Especially with my beautiful blonde hair kaytie. Also if you want any more reccomendations on Guat/honduras let me know!
